Lunchtime in SoMa just keeps getting better: Town Hall kicked off their first lunchtime BBQ in the courtyard flanking the restaurant, serving fried chicken sandwiches for $9 (they do some of my favorite fried chicken in SF), a smoked and grilled andouille po’ boy for $8 (look for other kinds of sausages in the future), and their St. Louis spareribs with sides, plus cookies and Town Hall’s famous butterscotch pot de crème for dessert. In the future, Mitch Rosenthal said to look for some quirky specials, like BBQ baloney or a Taylor pork roll, a Jersey-style sandwich he remembers from his childhood. (Follow menu updates on their Twitter feed.)

The Town Hall folks have been trying to work out a take-out concept for a while, so it seems they have found it. The first day was all hands on deck, since over 150 people showed up. You can enter the courtyard either off Fremont or Howard—it’s just north of the restaurant. Hours are Mon–Fri 11:30am–2pm, and there are high hopes to do a happy hour in the future.

Meanwhile, over at their sister restaurant, Anchor & Hope, it looks like the already-popular beer selection is seriously ramping up. They brought on Eric Cripe from The Jug Shop to consult on the list, and are putting in 16 taps, plus they will have a beer engine to hand pump beer from casks (how British), and eventually will have 60–80 bottles. The menu is already quite beer-friendly, so this is going to be a fun program to see take shape.

The new beer list will be in place on July 8th, when Anchor & Hope kicks off a happy hour with $1 oysters, and chef Sarah Schafer is making some sausages (she’s actually using the first smoker Town Hall bought since they are now on their third).

1300 On Fillmore has launched happy hour Mon–Thu 4:30pm–6:30pm, with $5 well drinks, $5 house wines, $3 draft beers and $3 sparkling wine in the bar and Heritage Lounge.

And 1300 has also kicked off a $28 Monday night fried chicken prix-fixe special. You get your choice of a mixed green salad or spiced pumpkin bisque, a serving of black skillet-fried chicken with buttermilk whipped potatoes and pan gravy, and apple cobbler à la mode for dessert.

Grand Cafe
Grand Cafe

Grand Cafe Bar has a revitalized look, refreshed interior, a new chef (chef de cuisine Sophiane Benaouda), and more. His all day bar menu highlights Southern French classics with a lighter twist, including salt cod beignets and pissaladière, plus hearty brasserie dishes like beef bourguignon or steak frites paired with a beer or glass of wine for $18; there is also a renewed focus on desserts. The 3–7 happy hour is, you guessed it, Mon–Fri 3pm–7pm with drinks and appetizers priced $3–$7. Jacques Bezuidenhout and Danielle Kuzinich just designed the cocktail list.

Bacar has decided to continue with Sunday brunch service, and is offering bottomless Bloody Marys made with Lotus vodka. Sundays from 10am–2pm. And did you know on home game days, you can show your ticket stub to enjoy a Pabst and a burger for $8 in the main bar?

South Happy Hour
South Happy Hour

The baseball season has started, which means there are some ballpark-adjacent happy hours kicking off. From now until the end of baseball season (not just game days), South will have a happy hour from 3pm–6:30pm. Every weekday and on game day Saturdays, you can enjoy $6 wines and $5 bar bites and beers; click here for the menu (the menu will also be available after the game).

Acme Chophouse is launching a non-game-day happy hour called Acme Hour on Thursday April 16th. There will be $3–$5 specials on drinks and food from 4pm–10pm. Acme will also be giving away prizes next Thursday, including two tickets to the Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation tasting party on April 23rd. The happy hour will continue on all weekdays when the Giants are NOT in town, from 4:30pm–6:30pm. The $5 appetizer list includes baby back ribs, barbecued chicken wings, flatbread, salumi, and Dungeness crab fritters.

Chez Papa Resto
Chez Papa Resto

Chez Papa Resto is continuing the restaurant’s monthly changing four-course prix-fixe menu (plus an amuse bouche) with a March celebration of Delta asparagus and Périgord truffles. The March prix-fixe menu is available Thursday through Saturday for $55, with an optional wine pairing for an additional $35.

Executive chef David Bazirgan’s March menu includes an amuse bouche; an asparagus trio: flan with prosciutto, grilled salad and soup with black truffle emulsion; sautéed skate wing with pancetta-wrapped asparagus, artichokes barigoule and a brown butter hollandaise; roasted California squab with hen of the woods mushrooms, sweet onions, white asparagus and squab-truffle jus; and black truffle soufflé with sauternes anglaise.

And for those who are working or shopping downtown, Chez Papa Resto has a happy hour Monday through Friday from 5pm–7pm, with $6 cocktails and bar menu bites such as baked goat cheese with onion jam and crostini; grilled lamb chop with ratatouille; and tuna tartare with cucumber and Espelette crackers.
