  • On June 10, 2009 it was announced that San Francisco, the birthplace of the United Nations, will be the lead US city to partner with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria Partnership, a coalition of more than 40 international conservation, development, and travel industry organizations to implement sustainable tourism principles.
  • On June 10, 2009, "The Nalgene Least Wasteful City Study" revealed results that ranked 23 waste-focused habits of urban Americans, from recycling, to using public transportation, to shutting off the lights when leaving the room. When the results were tallied, San Francisco earned the title of America's Least Wasteful City.
  • On June 10, 2008 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed legislation to implement a 10-year solar rebate program for local residents, businesses and non-profits. It is the first solar rebate of its kind and size offered by a city in the U.S. and will create the nation’s largest municipal solar program.
  • San Francisco currently has a 70 percent recycling rate. The city’s goal is 75 percent by 2010 and zero waste by 2020.
