Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square is proud to be part of a brand whose core values include minimizing the operational impacts of its properties on the planet. This green philosophy has also grown to become Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ main corporate social responsibility platform. Fairmont has embraced policies that reduce waste, conserve water and energy, address climate change, support sustainable communities and provide meeting planners with a green meeting option.
For operations, it includes such activities as redistribution of household goods and food to those in need, purchasing wind and run-of-river hydro power, and a green procurement policy. Fairmont’s menu items highlight local, organic and sustainable food products, including organic or biodynamic wines, local purveyors and on-site herb gardens.
Working alongside the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Fairmont has pledged to reduce operational CO2 emissions from its existing portfolio of hotels by 20% below 2006 levels by 2013.
In addition to being part of a brand that embraces its social responsibility to be eco-friendly, Fairmont Heritage Place’s home at the historic Ghirardelli Square places heavy emphasis on its role to be environmentally conscious.
The tenants at Ghirardelli Square are all-in participation of a comprehensive recycling program. The program includes co-mingling, composting separation and much more. Ghirardelli Square has also partnered with Goodwill Industries for e-waste and electronic recycling. The Square is up to a 64% diversion rate—closing in on their goal of 75%. Other partners include Metro Maintenance and Cagwin & Dorward who both demonstrate strong green practices.

Good rooms green:
Reclaimed wood was used for the bed frames. They were built and designed locally by Ohio Design. Each room features light fixtures constructed with reused glass bottles, in collaboration with Readymade Magazine. All rooms contain recycled wallpaper (80% post-consumer content) and carpet (25% post-consumer content). Our fleece bedspreads were made from 85% recycled soda bottles and unusable second quality fabrics and garments. We used the old bedspreads from the previous incarnation of the hotel were converted into throw pillows. All soaps and shampoos are in wall-mounted dispensers so that there is no packaging waste. We also installed a sink-positive (www.sinkpositive.com) in each room. This cuts down on water usage in all our 117 newly renovated rooms.
In additional to being GOOD to our environment, The Good Hotel is committed to being GOOD to our community as a whole. As a part of Joie de Vivre’s hotel line, the Good Hotel is dedicated to donating at a minimum $200 per guest room per year to organizations in their communities. The Good Hotel’s philanthropic partner in the You Can Make a Difference program is One Brick, a grass roots volunteer organization that provides support to hundreds of local non-profit and community organizations.
Please drop by and see how GOOD it is to be GREEN!!!
