The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose officially launches its solar project this month with a 185-kilowatt system atop the roof of Parkside Hall.

The project – a partnership between the City of San Jose, SunPower Corp and The Tech – is expected to supplement the museum’s energy supply by nearly 10 percent with the use of 800 photovoltaic solar panels.

The Tech has also replaced its incandescent light bulbs inside the museum with energy-efficient fluorescents.

Additionally, The Tech features as one of its many hand-on exhibits “Green by Design,” which encourages visitors to explore how to incorporate innovative energy conservation technologies into their lives and appreciate how these technologies are making a positive impact in their communities and around the world.

For example, museum guests can design and race a hybrid car to see how far they go on a cup of gas or experiment with ways to focus the sun’s energy using mirrors to build a solar dish that directs sunlight onto a solar cell.

The largest hotel in the city with more guest rooms and meeting space than any other, the Hilton San Francisco has had in place a recycling program since its last major renovation over 20 years ago. Its newest program, guest room recycling, encourages guests to separate recyclables and has already increased waste diversion by 5 ½ tons.

After only a single month, 11,000 pounds of material were recycled and diverted from landfill. In equivalencies, this is the annual electrical usage of almost two households. In addition the hotel saved $2,000.
