Visitors seeking ways to green their San Francisco vacations should look no further than Aquarium of the Bay. Located along San Francisco’s picturesque waterfront, Aquarium visitors learn more about the diverse aquatic animals that make their homes in the San Francisco Bay and surrounding waters. The Aquarium is one of only four Certified Green Business attractions in San Francisco and is focused on inspiring conservation of the Bay and all underwater ecosystems.
Visitors get up close and personal with 20,000 aquatic animals, ranging from mighty Sevengill Sharks to the colorful Garibaldi, the California state marine fish, which helps develop a new appreciation for the beauty and diversity of life underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and the waves of the San Francisco Bay. Naturalists lead daily and special activities that focus on preserving the Bay, its ecosystems and inhabitants through programs including shark feeding presentations; the ability to interact with the divers who care for the Aquarium’s animals; a Water Discovery Lab where visitors become water detectives, learning about the secrets of the deep and – literally – getting their hands wet and much more.
Visitors who show proof of public transportation have the opportunity to save some green at the Aquarium ticket booth, with a $2 discount on adult admission and $1 on child and senior admission. Additional information can be found at www.aquariumofthebay.com or by calling 888-SEA-DIVE.

During a time of finite petroleum resources, increasing costs and a dependency on foreign oil, California State Parks, Hearst Castle promotes and utilizes innovative and cleaner alternative energy sources to power their facility. Visitors are shuttled up to the castle in buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG), while backup generators for the castle operate on biodiesel. By using CNG buses California State Parks, Hearst Castle has displaced millions of gallons of diesel fuel, a toxic air contaminant. The shuttle operates 362 days a year and averages 22,000 operational hours per year. We provide transportation for about 700,000 passengers annually. The shuttle begins each trip from the visitor center at 35 feet above sea level, and travels 4.5 miles to an elevation of 1,600 feet to the historic buildings of Hearst Castle. We also use several electric cars for in park employee transportation and work projects.
All Hearst Castle box lunches served are self contained in portable post consumer recycled boxes. No Styrofoam containers or other non-biodegradable products are used. The giftshop sells numerous products made from recycled materials.
Hearst Castle is also a member of the California Central Coast Clean Cities Coalition, or “C5”. C5 has a mission to expand the use of alternative fuel vehicles and fueling infrastructure throughout the Central Coast. Members are from local schools & universities, fuel and vehicle providers, local government, and the general public.
