  • March 2 - San Francisco is a primary reason that California has the most green jobs in the country with 125,000. The city recently passed $100 million worth of bonds to go toward future sustainable work. More than half of area commuters use public transportation.
  • Nov. 24 - San Francisco's waste collection company revealed figures that demonstrate the mandatory composting and recycling law has led to serious greenhouse gas reductions from turning dinner scraps into fertilizer. Since the compost collection program began in 1996, it has composted more than 620,000 tons of material and avoided the creation 137,000 tons of methane.
  • As of Sept., 2009, travelers flying out of San Francisco International Airport can be the first in the nation to wipe away some of the damage their flights wreak on the planet by swiping their credit cards with three Climate Passport kiosks.
  • On June 10, 2009 it was announced that San Francisco, the birthplace of the United Nations, will be the lead US city to partner with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria Partnership, a coalition of more than 40 international conservation, development, and travel industry organizations to implement sustainable tourism principles.
  • On June 10, 2009, "The Nalgene Least Wasteful City Study" revealed results that ranked 23 waste-focused habits of urban Americans, from recycling, to using public transportation, to shutting off the lights when leaving the room. When the results were tallied, San Francisco earned the title of America's Least Wasteful City.
  • San Francisco currently has a 77 percent recycling rate. The city’s goal was 75 percent by 2010 and zero waste by 2020.
