It's also about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world's most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. Pasados del Presidio

The Presidio we know today has its roots in events that took place more than 230 years ago. In 1776, a group of soldiers and pioneering families completed their long trip from Mexico to the bay in Alta California. Here they settled and built El Presidio, a fortified settlement. From this modest beginning, the City of San Francisco would be born. Each year the park hosts a series of public programs commemorating "San Francisco's birthday" and the founding of the Presidio with storytelling, kids' activities, a horseback flag ceremony, guided walks, and evening concerts. Pluto in Capricorn: New, Reconstituted, and Spontaneous Dances
Dance

What a difference a quarter century makes. One of San Francisco's cultural icons, dancer and choreographer Anne Bluethenthal, looks back on her first 25 years and anticipates the next in an epic evening of performance entitled Pluto in Capricorn: New, Reconstituted, and Spontaneous Dances. In her now familiar weaving of myriad forms, Bluethenthal has invited guest artists to perform improvisationally with text, lights, music, movement and visual art for the "spontaneous" segment of the show. The "reconstituted" segment will feature several of Bluethenthal's signature solos performed by guest and veteran artists including Robert Henry Johnson, Laura Elaine Ellis, and Alyah Baker woven into a live retrospective look at 25 years of work. The performance's "new" segment will feature the premiere of Pluto in Capricorn performed by Bluethenthal and three other dancers. Time: Friday and Saturday 8:00pm, Sunday 6:00pm

Qool Happy Hour
Music

Qool is the original clubbing happy hour in San Francisco, if not the world, and the longest continuously running dance music event in the city. Every Wednesday evening, Jondi and Spesh host a five hour club night featuring music, mostly electronic, with a progressive theme, from electro, to breaks to techno, to progressive house and even ambient. Each DJ plays a short 45-minute set, and the talent ranges from bedroom DJs to international superstars. All are welcome, and partygoers are a chaotically diverse yet harmonious mix of electronic music lovers, suit clad downtown wage slaves, hippies, artists, trust fund babies, neighborhood homeless, and international tourists. The enthusiasm and dedication of Qoolios is world famous. In fact Qool is often pegged for its personal vibe and all out "Saturday night" feeling. A good chunk of the proceeds from the low cover charge go to non-profit organizations, including The SETI Institute and the San Francisco Homeless Coalition. Time: Wednesday 5:00pm-10:00pm

Tools For Peace: The Mandala Project
Music

School children from four Bay Area schools, together with Tibetan monks will spend five afternoons (September 21-25) creating two madalas out of sand for the congregation and public to enjoy. Creating a sand madala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition and symbolically represents a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective. It is then ritualistically destroyed to symbolize the transitory nature of material life. This process will culminate in a champagne reception, dinner, special musical performance and silent auction that will benefit Tools for Peace. Time: Saturday 6:00pm-10:00pm

The Dyybuk
Theater

In 2008 the Habima, Israel's national theater, produced an extraordinary new version of The Dybbuk, the expressionistic masterpiece that brought modern Hebrew theater to life in 1922. This production will come to the Museum for its only West Coast performances. For almost 100 years, The Dybbuk has been the signature production of the Habima, the first Hebrew-language theater and Israel's national theater company. The recent Habima interpretation of S. Anksy's story of love, kabbalah and exorcisms will come to the Contemporary Jewish Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Chagall and the Art of the Russian Jewish Theater, 1919-1949. The exhibition contains costume and scene design from the original 1922 production, much of it never before seen outside of Russia. Time: Wednesday and Thursday 7:00pm, Sunday 5:00pm and 7:30pm

Eldorado
Special Events & Festivals

Eldorado (Belgium/France 2008) is Bouli Lanners' idiosyncratic film about an unlikely encounter that leads to a journey fraught with humor, melancholy and sadness. Two outsiders share an absurdist journey through the surreal backwoods of Belgium in this eccentric, melancholy road movie. Yvan (writer/director Bouli Lanners) and Elie's (Fabrice Adde) first meeting is inauspicious. The former returns to his ransacked house to find the latter hiding under a bed, too frightened to try to flee as Yvan waits him out with a pipe in his hands. But something about Elie, an entirely hapless junkie, elicits a kind of grudging empathy in Yvan, who scrapes together a living importing vintage cars from the US. Before long the two set off in the titular Eldorado through the back roads of Southern Belgium towards Elie's parents' house near the French border. As they make their way through trying circumstances and bizarre encounters, including brushes with a delusional nudist RV enthusiast and a collector of classic cars culled from fatal crashes, it becomes clear that something from his past is driving Yvan's halting attempts to help his new friend. The weather-beaten faces of Lanners and Adde exude a world-weariness that contrasts sweetly with the film's exquisitely dry humor. The deadpan laughs soften the pessimism of a wistful story of two lost souls unsure of how to make their way through a seemingly apathetic world. Time: Varies By Event

Koret Auditorium Movies: Films to Draw By
Free

The theme for this month's films is Films to Draw By, focusing on inspirations for Paul Madonna, artist and creator of All Over Coffee, which is celebrating half a decade in the San Francisco Chronicle with an exhibition at the Library. Schedule: July 2: In Manhattan (1979, 96 min.), New Yorker Isaac Davis hates his job, doesn't love his girlfriend, and his ex-wife is a lesbian who has written a book about their marriage. Then he meets and falls in lust with a beautiful woman, which starts him on a search for romance and fulfillment. Starring Woody Allen, Meryl Streep, Mariel Hemingway and Diane Keaton. July 9: The Conversation (1974, 114 min.) is about a routine wire-tapping job that turns into a nightmare as surveillance man Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) hears something in his recording of a young couple in a park that may lead to their murder. Filmed in San Francisco by local legend Francis Ford Coppola and winner of the 1974 Palm d'Or at Cannes. July 16: Pollock (2001, 123 min.) is the story of New York artist Jackson Pollock who created work that made him the first internationally-famous modern painter in America. July 23: Sketches of Frank Gehry (2006, 84 min.) is an exploration of Gehry's basic philosophy, early influences, and somewhat mysterious process, providing a fresh perspective into how architecture, and this architect, works. July 30: Man on Wire (2008, 94 min.) is a look at the high-wire walk made by Philippe Petit in 1974 between the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City, and how it is still considered one of history's most artistic crimes. Time: Thursday 12:00pm

A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Seagull
Theater

Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, to be staged by artistic director Lisa Tromovitch, is by turns earthy and fantastical. It is set in ancient Athens, where Duke Theseus and his captured bride-to-be Hippolita warily approach their coming nuptials. Love is in the air but the tune is often jangled, not only for the noble couple and some lovestruck young Athenians, but also for the mischievous fairies who dwell unseen in a nearby wood. After a short, but successful run at The Bankhead Theater, The Seagull returns to the outdoor venue at Concannon. A rising star and one on her way down, a cutting edge writer and a popular novelist, a school teacher, a doctor, two housekeepers and a farm manager meet together at the shores of a majestic lake in this sublime love story. Concerning Strange Devices from the Distant West
Theater

Well before the digital age, the camera selected, filtered, and obscured the truth, even as it promised to provide an authentic look at distant lands. Naomi Iizuka explores the intersection of art and authenticity in a haunting play commissioned by Berkeley Rep called Concerning Strange Devices from the Distant West. In this world premiere, wealthy Americans invade Yokohama in the 1880s with a weird new technology. Their cameras capture images of geishas, monks, and shrines and send them to the future in a flash, where we continue to seek meaning through lenses of exoticism and xenophobia. Berkeley Rep presented the world premiere of Iizuka's 36 Views before it played off Broadway. Her work has also been seen at major theatres in Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego, and Seattle. Concerning Strange Devices from the Distant West takes its title from the first treatise on photography translated into Japanese. It will be staged by Les Waters, whose shows have ranked among the 10 best plays of 2007 in Time, 2006 in the New York Times, and 2005 in Time Out New York. Time: To Be Announced

Julia
Special Events & Festivals

Erick Zonca's take on John Cassavetes' Gloria, features a riveting performance by Tilda Swinton. The key to Swinton's performance is that she's playing an actress - not a professional one, but a wily, desperate woman under the influence who adapts herself to what each new situation calls for, sometimes well, sometimes badly, but always with every fiber of her being. Her faces are many, including the eerie black death mask she wears when she agrees to help her unstable Mexican neighbor (Kate del Castillo) kidnap her young son from the clutches of his wealthy grandfather. It's a crackpot scheme made more so by Julia's half-cocked attempt to secure herself a bigger share of the ransom money, and by the time the movie winds its way from Los Angeles to Tijuana, one kidnapping gives way to another with no end in sight. Directing his first theatrical feature in the decade since The Dreamlife of Angels, Zonca tips his hat to the entire John Cassavetes oeuvre while crafting a messy, nervy and frequently exhilarating thriller that operates on instinct rather than plot and features richly pulpy dialogue by Zonca and coscreenwriter Aude Py. Summer Sausage and Perfect Punch
Food & Wine

Meat master Ryan Farr will teach sausage-making and grilling, meat purveyor Steve McCarthy of Prather Ranch Meat Company will discuss sustainable meat, and mixologist H. Joseph Ehrmann of Square One Organic Spirits will demonstrate how to construct farmers market-inspired cocktails. Participants will learn to make four different types of sausage using certified humane heritage Berkshire pork raised locally in the Capay Valley. Farr will show what cuts of meat are best for the lip-smacking links, how to grind, season and stuff the meat, and how to grill the finished sausage. Ehrmann will use locally-owned Square One Organic Spirits to create a farmers market punch and demonstrate variations on two seasonal cocktails. Participants will then enjoy their creations during a family-style meal along with market fresh coleslaw and beans, and will leave with food and drink recipes and the sausages they have made. Time: Friday 5:30pm-8:30pm
