Freda Payne's prolific career began in the '60s, working with jazz legends such as Pearl Bailey, Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine, Quincy Jones and many others. In the '80s, Freda concentrated on acting and television, briefly hosting her own talk show, but never losing touch with her music. Her indelible mark on the music industry continues to be made. Whether singing pop, jazz or R&B, there are few singers finer that Freda Payne.Time: Sunday and Tuesday-Friday 8:00pm, Saturday 7:00pm

Jews on Vinyl: And You Shall Know Us by the Trail of Our Vinyl
Museum
Jews on Vinyl is a unique exhibition based on the new book by Roger Bennett and Josh Kun: And You Shall Know Us by the Trail of Our Vinyl: The Jewish Past as Told by the Records We Have Loved and Lost, which spans the history of Jewish recorded music from the 1940s to the 1980s. What started out as a mutual affinity for kitschy Jewish album covers--think Neil Diamond baring his chest hair on the cover of Hot August Night or Barbara Streisand in hot pants on the cover of Streisand Superman--soon became a quest for identity, history, and culture between the grooves of LPs. Together, guest curators Bennett and Kun embarked on a thrilling journey, scouring the world to collect thousands of vinyl LPs from attics, garage sales, and dusty archives. Pieced together, these scratched, once-loved and now-forgotten audio gems tell a vibrant tale: the story of Jews in America. Time: Monday-Tuesday 11:00am-5:30pm, Thursday 1:00pm-8:30pm, Friday-Sunday 11:00am-5:30pm, Opening Reception: Thursday (2/5) 7:00pm-10:00pm

Art in the Atrium: Kerry James Marshall
Museum
Over the course of two weeks, renowned artist Kerry James Marshall worked with painters from San Francisco's Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center to create a new commission in the museum's primary public space. Marshall's rich and varied body of work includes large-scale paintings and installations that explore issues of racial identity and black history. Utilizing the two large surfaces in the Haas Atrium that once featured Sol LeWitt's wall drawings, Marshall's new murals will depict Mount Vernon and Monticello, the estates of American presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Although these cherished sites have been depicted countless times, Marshall's paintings stand apart by playfully incorporating the slaves who supported plantation life. At first glance a number of optical tricks conceal them from view, but visitors who engage in the artist's visual game will discover the otherwise invisible figures who are so often omitted from representations of American history.

Otello
Music
In Verdi's masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy, a great warrior discovers the one weapon against which he has no defense-his own jealousy. Bulgarian soprano Svetla Vassileva, recent winner of the Italian Association of Music Critics' prestigious Abbiati Prize, brings tenderness and vocal brilliance to the role of Desdemona, the faithful wife who finds facts are no match for manufactured suspicion. Music Director Nicola Luisotti, praised by London's Financial Times for conveying Verdi's "sweep, lyricism and subtle detail," conducts.

Faust
Music
One of the most popular operas of all time, Gounod's Faust returns in a passion-filled production. Stefano Secco, praised as a "tremendous actor" and "a find" by London's The Guardian, portrays the forlorn philosopher who regains his youth by making a dubious deal with the Devil. Patricia Racette, "a dramatic soprano of the utmost subtlety and emotional power" (New York Post), plays the object of his desire. John Relyea, lauded by The New York Times for his "stentorian power [and] wily, seductive lyricism", is a superbly sinister Méphistophéles. Maurizio Benini, acclaimed for his mastery of this gorgeous score, conducts in a classic production.

The Girl of the Golden West
Music
A crafty criminal. A suspicious sheriff. A frontier woman with a tender heart who knows how to shoot a gun. If they sound like characters from a classic Western, they are-except their gunfights and poker games are set to a brilliant, blazing score. A love triangle set during the California Gold Rush, the work Giacomo Puccini considered "the best of my operas," returns home for the first time in three decades in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Nicola Luisotti conducts a rip-snortin' cast led by Deborah Voigt, "a soprano of penetrating power and clarity" (The New York Times), and Salvatore Licitra, "a tenor at the top of his form" (San Francisco Chronicle).
Approximate running time: 3 hours. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

Die Walkure
Music
A powerful god finds himself torn by conflicting loyalties in the second installment of Richard Wagner's majestic Ring cycle, which features the famous "Ride of the Valkyries." Director Francesca Zambello gives this epic tale of an emotionally volatile father and his disobedient children a distinctly American touch while honoring its mythic roots. Donald Runnicles, whose command of Wagner's music "offers one of the city's most reliable musical thrills" (San Francisco Chronicle), conducts a world-class cast including two stunning sopranos: Nina Stemme, the sublime Senta of San Francisco Opera's The Flying Dutchman (2004), and Eva-Maria Westbroek, whose Wagnerian vocalism was called "outstanding" by London critics. Mark Delavan, hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as a "robust and commanding" Wotan in the 2008 Ring cycle opera Das Rheingold, continues the journey.
Approximate running time: 4 hours, 35 minutes. Sung in German with English supertitles.
Schedule:
Thursday, June 10, 7:00pm

Christmas In San Francisco with Russ Lorenson
Music
Skip the Christmas caroling this year and spend a cozy winter's evening with Russ Lorenson and his special guests as they celebrate a jazzy Christmas, San Francisco style! With songs by such great composers and lyricists as Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, and Frank Loesser, there's something for everyone in this swinging evening of jingle jazz. Heard each year on the Bay Area's official Christmas station, 96.5 KOIT-FM with his recording of "Christmas in San Francisco," Russ has established a reputation as one of the San Francisco Bay Area's leading interpreters of jazz standards, with a sound and approach that place him at the intersection of Broadway, jazz, and pop - the very essence of the Great American Songbook. Jazz Review says that "Lorenson is not just a crooner covering the traditional Sinatra style or trying to be the next Connick; he is his own man."

The Metaphysics of Notation
Free
The Faculty Choice series continues this year with a new acoustic twist. Mark Applebaum, associate professor of composition and theory in Stanford's Department of Music, has composed The Metaphysics of Notation specifically for installation at the Cantor Arts Center. This unique and unusual work will wind its way around the Geballe Family Balcony before reaching its destination in the Rowland K. Rebele Gallery. The score will be on display during museum hours for 11 months and will be performed by musicians-Stanford students, faculty, and visiting artists-on site at midday each Friday.
Applebaum's score is a work of visual art teeming with evocative glyphs and densely arranged pictographs. The meaning of these visual figures is deliberately left undefined by the composer; each performer is invited to make a sonic realization of the score by articulating its signs according to a personal interpretation.

Richard Avedon
Museum
Whether photographing politicians, artists, writers, fashion models, or movie stars, Richard Avedon revolutionized the genre of portraiture. He rejected conventional stiff-and-staid poses and instead captured both motion and emotion in the faces of his subjects, often encapsulating their intrigue in a single charged moment. SFMOMA is proud to be the only U.S. venue for this retrospective that spans the artist's remarkable career. Featuring more than 200 photographs along with a selection of vintage magazines, the exhibition presents work spanning Avedon's entire career, from his earliest street scenes to his breakthrough 1950s Paris fashion pictures and the iconic celebrity portraits that brought him world renown. This in-depth retrospective reveals Avedon's singular ability to blur the lines between photojournalism, fashion photography, and fine art.

Yves Klein
Museum
The first American retrospective of Klein's work in nearly 30 years, this exhibition examines the artist's life and career from the mid-1950s to his untimely death in 1962. A highly influential French conceptual artist, Klein was also a composer, a judo master, and a student of Rosicrucian mysticism. Above all, he was a multifaceted individual who believed in the transformative power of art. In his series works, including the Monochromes, Anthropometries, Cosmogonies, Air Architecture, Fire Paintings, Sponge Reliefs and Actions, Klein sought to explore immateriality by experimenting with color, texture, and combinations of organic and inorganic forms.

This selection of 11 works includes loans from the Marmor Collection in addition to works from the collection.
After emigrating from Switzerland in 1947, Robert Frank (born 1924) documented his travels throughout the United States in Drive-by Shooting. With a camera and an old car, Frank began a solitary road trip shooting photos from coast to coast. His black and white photographs of ordinary objects and city scenes encapsulate a sense of loneliness and banality, reflecting Frank's personal experience with American life and landscape. This display of 14 works features examples from The Americans, Frank's most celebrated body of work.

Hiroshima: Christmas at the Rrazz Room
Music
Since Hiroshima's inception in 1980, the group has assumed the artistic mission of bridging cultural divides through the power of music. Hiroshima has borrowed from numerous cultures - Asian, Latin American, African American and more - and merged these influences into a unique and innovative whole that is solely their own. The result is a brand of music that speaks to nearly every aspect of contemporary culture. The goodwill mission continues with the recent release of Little Tokyo (HUCD 3123), Hiroshima's fourth album on Heads Up International. The album title, a reference to the well known Asian neighborhood in southern California, is Hiroshima's nod to the increasing importance in 21st century America of maintaining a positive and all-inclusive world view.

This exhibition of decorative and religious arts explores Thailand and Burma's shared aesthetic despite their contrasting histories.
Drawn exclusively from the museum's extensive holdings of artworks from this region and period, many of the sumptuous artworks have never before been on view. The majority of the artworks are from the Doris Duke Collection which the museum acquired in 2002. The more than 100 artworks include gilded and mirrored ritual vessels, black lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture, and vibrant, colorful paintings.

The Facts Behind the Funnies: Schulz's Passion for Precision
Museum
As a cartoonist read by millions of fans, Charles Schulz felt an obligation to get his facts straight about the subjects he tackled in Peanuts. This exhibition reveals Schulz's dedication to detail in order to ensure that sports plays and positions (from ice skating to surfing), medical conditions, musical notes, and even Woodstock's shorthand were accurately depicted.

Peanuts Cooks
Museum
Peanuts offers many tempting treats from Halloween candy to goodies delivered by the Easter Beagle. Charles Schulz also pokes fun at his least favorite food, coconut, in this exhibit featuring Peanuts strips, cookbooks, and licensing ephemera from Interstate Bakeries and Dolly Madison. A 1967 Hallmark cookbook featured a variety of popular dishes that indicate just how much tastes have changed over the years, including marshmallo and mayonnaise salad, baked corn with sweet cream and peanut butter and bacon sandwiches.

Sunday at the Funnies
Museum
Sunday at the Funnies examines the evolution of the iconic Sunday "funny pages" through a display of original strips and newspaper tear sheets from various cartoon artists. Visitors will gain an appreciation about the special rewards and challenges of drawing a Sunday strip. Schulz once wrote, for example, "When I first began to do Sunday pages [in January 1952], I found the pacing difficult... Gradually, however, I began to see what the problem was and since then have learned to visualize a story or episode as a whole."

May I Have This Dance?
Museum
Dance in Peanuts is often an exuberant expression of joi de vivre, especially when Snoopy offers up his "happy dance." Many dance fads are given a nod (the mambo, jingle bell twist, and disco), and traditional dances such as the polka and the waltz also make an appearance. In addition, Charles Schulz seemingly chronicles his own dance lessons in a 1995 series featuring Charlie Brown's lessons with Emily.

Peanuts... Naturally
Museum
Charles Schulz's interest in the environment and ecology is reflected in Peanuts, but as is always the case, he does not approach the subject matter in a shrill or preachy manner, but examines it with humor and wit. The reader's attention is cleverly drawn to Rachel Carson's groundbreaking book, Silent Spring, in strips from 1962/1963, for example, while Snoopy and Woodstock carry the ecology storyline.
